The Lakes Townhouse

Residential

Background

Pernille Lind Studio was afforded the exciting opportunity to renovate and redesign the interiors of a four-storey townhouse, located on one of the most charming and sought-after streets in Copenhagen. The house is situated off one of the roads by the East city lakes, also called ‘kartoffelrækkerne’.

The Brief

A couple with Danish and South African backgrounds having lived in London for years, wanted to create a home which reflected their individual heritage, yet was complimentary to the building’s attributes and context.

Bespoke Interior Design

Living spaces spread across four floors had to be re-imagined and re-configured, to suit a young modern couple expecting to grow as a family. Therefore, we began with the fundamentals, such as the kitchen layout and space which was opened up and connected into what was previously a small living room. The overall interior was considered in such a way as to compliment, rather than overpower the original charm of the house, a process that heavily focused on natural materials such as timber and a muted colour scheme.

Our kitchen design celebrates the warm and inviting character of fumed oak, which also informed much of the bespoke joinery, such as the study library and bathroom cabinets. Central to the space, the marble kitchen island is another contrasting element that blends practical function with pleasing aesthetic.

Marble was also the basis of the mosaic floor patterns for all bathrooms; a design choice which compliments the classic characteristics of the house. Fabric tones of olive green, midnight blues and pale browns was chosen for the upholstery and some pattern to add a more exotic layer was sought through a selection of vintage Turkish rugs. The overall furniture and styling is a mix of vintage pieces sourced from around Europe, imbued with the familiarity of iconic Danish designs.
